Statical Planning of Colombia’s Transmission System Using Genetics Algorithm

This paper presents a genetic algorithm for solving the optimal transmission network applied to the expansion planning of Colombia’s system. Main improvements have been introduced in the genetic algorithm: initial population is obtained by constructive heuristic methods of optimization, and elitism and building block concepts are used in the optimization process. An important part of this optimization process is the obtaining of initial solution families with attractive characteristics. These solutions in general contain lines or groups of lines (building blocks) that will appear in the good solutions obtained through the genetic algorithm method. This technique yields excellent results for a difficult large scale real-life problem.
